Crafting the Iconic H&M Times Square Store

Retail | Wall Panels

Concreteworks East is proud to showcase its collaboration with H&M and Jeffrey Taylor Architects on the remarkable renovation of H&M’s flagship store in Times Square, New York. This project showcases our expertise in creating bespoke architectural elements, specifically through the use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) wall panels.

Design and Fabrication
The centerpiece of this project is the nearly 8-foot-tall GFRC wall panels, which feature a variety of fluted patterns running vertically. These patterns were meticulously crafted using CNC equipment to cut high-density foam, which was then coated with a smooth shell in preparation for casting. The result is a series of panels that not only enhance the verticality of the space but also introduce a dynamic sense of movement.

Custom Color and Finish
In collaboration with the project team, we developed a custom warm beige color for the panels. This color was chosen to harmonize with the store’s flooring, furniture, and clothing displays, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. The panels were hand-cast in our signature honeycomb finish, which leaves a natural array of small voids on the surface. This finish provides a striking contrast between the raw concrete texture and the soft, warm color tone, with each panel exhibiting a unique pattern of honeycombing.

Precision and Coordination
Working closely with Schimenti, the general contractor, we produced custom-sized panels and integrated specific features such as knockouts for elevator buttons and wall signage. This level of precision ensured that the panels seamlessly fit into the store’s design, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.

Impact on Store Design
The GFRC panels play a crucial role in the overall design of the H&M Times Square store, contributing to its modern and sophisticated look. The warm beige tones and unique textures of the panels complement the store’s contemporary interior, creating an inviting and stylish shopping environment. This project exemplifies how innovative materials and meticulous craftsmanship can transform a retail space into an architectural landmark.
